At first glance this appears to simply be a somewhat rough example of a 4-inch Smith & Wesson Model 15. The condition is poor, but this firearm appears to have a bit of history.

This revolver was evidently a Christmas gift to Brigadier General Charles Baron, and is so engraved on the right side of the frame: "Presented to BRIG. GENERAL CHARLES BARON". The left side of the frame is also engraved, identifying the doner: "FROM MAJOR GENERAL LEO M. BOYLE DEC 25, 1966". (Major General Boyle was a career soldier, serving as head of the Illinois National Guard beginning in 1940.)

Charles Baron was an a interesting character in early 20th century Chicago; a decorated WWII veteran, successful businessman, twice arrested for murder, and on the IRS's list of the 42 most powerful mobsters. His ties to organized crime are well documented, as is his association with such varied characteres as "Mob Accountant" Meyer Lansky, Air Force General Curtis LeMay, and Jack Ruby. He was for a period the official greeter of the Sands Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas in 1960.

This revolver came with a very inappropriate set of Uncle Mikes grips, which I removed for my research. (It needs a set of period-correct S&W stocks.) The Unclle Mike grips are included..
