This is a very good example of the Remington Rolling Block, a single-shot, breech-loading rifle that was produced from the mid-1860s into the early 20th century. These rifles were known for having an extremely strong action, which could easily withstand the increased pressure of the new smokeless powders coming into use by the late 1880s. The Rolling Block saw service in conflicts ranging from the American Indian Wars, the Philippine Revolution, the Spanish–American War, the Mexican Revolution, and World War I. This example features a 30-inch barrel marked "7mm", which, given the number of calibers available for the Rolling Block, could indicate 7.65×53mm Argentine, 7.62×54mmR, or 7×57mm Mauser.
